The Story Behind the Story

I just arrived in Canada after an amazing time in Nashville at the Christian Alliance for Orphans (CAFO) Summit. The four day conference was focused on the different aspects of orphan care: adoption, foster care and residential care. It was interesting to find out that CAFO has now included a fourth pillar in the spectrum of orphan care which is family reunification; exactly what we began doing at Casa Bernabe in January of this year. I am heading up the newly founded department of family reunification and my psychologist and administrative assistant/nutritionist were also able to attend the conference.  Aside from all we received from the speakers and panels, the most incredible part of the conference was to be surrounded by thousands of people that have passionately dedicated their lives to taking care of orphans all over the world. Are you feeling burnt out or on the edge? Self-care has come to be our token response to this common situation, scratching our itch for the next panacea. For those of us who have worked in situations of taking care of children in youth that have experienced trauma, self-care has strolled into the spotlight in an unassuming way triggering that classic way of processing: where was this concept when I needed it 10 years ago? When I embarked on this journey of caring for the vulnerable, I can't remember a single soul warning me of the emotional risks of exposing myself to trauma or the inherent cost that chronic empathy would have on me. I was warned not to eat tacos off the street and to steer clear of certain "zonas peligrosas" but never about the exposure of my soul to the trauma of another. The Grace of God

I am back in New Orleans chilling with my three favourite ladies in the whole wide world. Hanna and Sophia are nearing 10 pounds each and have grown so much over the past three weeks. Andrea looks like a supermodel and my jaw drops thinking about how deep and thick God's grace has been over us in this season.  The past few weeks in Guatemala a bunch of my boys and I have been working hard in our house. Every time I ask if any of them want to help me, there are at least three that jump up and are ready to go paint, garden, clean, scale the walls and make me laugh; they have been amazing. They are so excited to meet the girls and feel like they are pitching in by getting the house ready for their little sisters.  Yesterday, before leaving Guatemala, I also able to see three of my boys off to their first day of work. Thanks to a few local businesses, we were able to get them a job for the months of November and December. One of the boys gave me a hug before leaving...
